Housing
Zoning Reform
Massachusetts must increase housing production to meet growing demand and reduce housing costs. Shannon supports reforming zoning laws to allow for greater housing density, including multi-unit developments in areas previously restricted to single-family homes. Shannon also supports requiring that at least 20 percent of units in new developments be designated as affordable housing. Additionally, Shannon supports streamlining permitting and approval processes to reduce unnecessary delays and lower development costs.
Mill Conversion and Community Redevelopment
Central Massachusetts is home to many historic mill buildings that once served as centers of manufacturing and economic activity. Today, many of these properties remain vacant. Shannon supports securing state funding and legislative resources to convert underutilized mill properties into housing, commercial space, and community assets. By repurposing existing structures, communities can increase housing availability while preserving local history and minimizing impacts on undeveloped land.
Addressing Crumbling Foundations
Many homeowners throughout the region face serious structural issues caused by deteriorating foundations. These problems create significant financial burdens and may threaten the safety and habitability of affected homes. Shannon supports establishing a statewide program modeled after successful efforts in neighboring states to help homeowners cover repair costs through a structured assistance program based on severity and need.
